Speeding army vehicle hits motorcyclists

Baramulla: Clashes broke out in Rafiabad area of Baramulla on Tuesday when an army vehicle hit and injured two youths riding a motorcycle.
Reports said that one of the vehicles in an army convoy hit a motorcycle on Baramulla Kupwara road on Tuesday morning near Nadihal village. The vehicle knocked down the two-wheeler injuring Asif Ahmad Lone Lone and Khursheed Ahmad Lone, both residents of Nadihal. They were immediately shifted to hospital where Asif was shifted to SKIMS for specialised treatment.
Soon after the accident, a large number of people from Nadihal and other areas took to the streets and staged a anti-army protest. The protesters blocked the Baramulla Kupwara road for hours demanding action against the army driver. They said the army vehicle was on a high speed when it hit the motorcycle in an attempt to overtake.
The police later registered a case against the army. Later teams of government forces reached the spot and clashed with protesting people. The protesters hurled stones and rocks while forces use tear smoke canisters and batons to disperse them. The clashes continued till afternoon.
Medical superintendent district hospital Baramulla Dr Masood said that the injured riders were stable. “One injured was shifted to Srinagar and other is under treatment in our hospital. Both of them are stable,” he said.
“We have registered a case against the army driver and further investigation is in progress. Some youths staged protest and hurled stones to police teams who were later chased peacefully,” a police officer said.
