Army assaults civilians in CM’s hometown

Anantnag: In yet another assault on civilians, the army left at least 8 persons with grievous wounds here in Karewa Colony area of the chief minister’s hometown Bijbehara.
According to reports, there was a firing incident inside the SICOP complex in Jablipora area of Bijbehara town on Saturday. The police and the army have denied that there was a firing incident, but locals told Kashmir Reader that they heard intense firing for more than half an hour from inside the SICOP complex.
The complex houses camps of the army’s 1 RR and the CRPF’s 90 Bn.
Sources told Kashmir Reader that some shots were fired at the camp from Karewa Colony, which is located at a hillock adjoining the SICOP complex.
Following the firing, army soldiers barged into the Karewa Colony and thrashed everybody who came their way.
“We received at least 8 injured, several of whom had fractured bones. One of them has been shifted to Anantnag district hospital,” a doctor at SDH Bijbehara told Kashmir Reader.
The injured told Kashmir Reader that the army ruthlessly beat people, even dragging them out of the local mosque before beating them.
“They did not spare even women,” a local said.
SP Anantnag Zubair Khan acknowledged that some people were beaten at Karewa Colony, but denied reports of firing inside the SICOP.
“There was no firing inside the camp. Some gunshots were heard from a distance and when army men went to ascertain the source from Karewa Colony, they were pelted with stones by some locals,” Khan said.
He said that army soldiers beat up some locals only after stones were thrown at them.
