Anantnag: The station house officer of Achabal was among six policemen killed in an ambush laid by militants on the outskirts of Anantnag town on Friday evening.
Police Control Room (PCR) Anantnag confirmed the killings. “Yes, they have been killed in an ambush by militants,” the PCR told Kashmir Reader.
SHO Feroz Dar was killed along with fellow policemen Feroz Ahmed Dar of Dogripora, Awantipora; Shariq Ahmed, Tasveer Ahmed, Sharaz Ahmed, and Mohammed Asif of Shangas, Ananatnag; and Sabzar Ahmed of Adsoo Shangas, Ananatnag.
No senior police official could be contacted for comments at this late hour. According to sources in the police, the SHO and his men were deployed to maintain law and order in Anantnag town.
Anantnag town erupted in clashes today after the killing of two civilians in an ongoing encounter between militants and government forces in Arwini area of neighbouring Kulgam district.
Thirty other civilians were injured during the day as reports of the killing of two Lashkar militants, including commander Junaid Mattoo, kept doing the rounds.
Sources in the police said that the SHO and his men were returning to their base in Achabal when militants attacked near Thajiwara village, some four kilometres from main town Anantnag.
The militants, as per sources, were in a Tavera vehicle and fired from a very close range at the policemen.
“The militants after killing them also scrutinised their vehicle and have decamped with at least four rifles from the spot,” sources in the police told Kashmir Reader.
The taking away of the rifles, however, could not be officially ascertained.
Soon after the shootout, a large team of police reached the spot and a cordon was laid to try nab the attackers.
The bodies of the slain policemen have been brought to Anantnag District Police Lines (DPL), where a wreath-laying ceremony was underway at the time this report was filed.
