Shopian: A special police officer (SPO) was critically injured on Sunday in Imam Sahib village, some eight kilometres from district headquarters Shopian, when unidentified gunmen shot him in the abdomen and arm. Witnesses said that he was not in uniform at the time and was standing near the taxi stand when he was shot.
Khursheed Ahmad Ganie, resident of Chitragam-Kalan, was posted at Imam Sahib SOG (special operations group) post as an SPO.
Medical Superintendent of Shopian district hospital told Kashmir Reader that Ganue had two bullet wounds, one in his right arm and the other in his abdomen. “After first-aid, we referred him to SMHS hospital Srinagar,” he said.
Locals said that police ransacked the Imam Sahib market after they found their mate injured with bullets.
“We rushed to take the cop to hospital but the forces arrived and smashed the vehicle we had brought to ferry the injured cop to hospital,” a cab driver told Kashmir Reader.
A group of shopkeepers said that the police were more intent on damaging the shops than rescuing the cop. “They indiscriminately damaged our shops, motor bikes and cars that were parked in the market,” said a local shopkeeper, standing some 500 meters away from his shop which he had left unattended.
Senior Superintendent of Police Shopian SA Dinker did not pick up phone calls from this correspondent.
