Clashes erupt in downtown Srinagar

Srinagar: Government forces Friday resorted to tear smoke shelling in downtown area of Srinagar to disperse protesters after Friday prayers, sources said.
Soon after the congregational prayers protesters took to streets outside the jamia masjid in Nowhatta area of Srinagar.

The protesters were raising slogans favouring militants. They also raised slogans favoring Hizb commander Sabzar Ahmad Bhat.
Sabzar Bhat and his associate Faizan Muzaffar were killed in Tral on May 28 during a gunfight.
Shouting slogans, the protesters tried to march towards main Nowhatta Chowk. However, forces deployed in the area swung into action and stopped demonstrators from moving ahead.
Forces resorted to teargas shelling against stone pelting protesters triggering clashes in area.
