Budgam: A policeman posted at Food Corporation of India’s guard room in Budgam on Saturday evening decamped with four assault rifles.
The cop identified as constable Syed Naved of Shopian’s Nazninpora was posted at FCI godown in Nasrullahpora village in the district.
Shopian is one of the four districts in south Kashmir where militancy has witnessed an upsurge. Naved had joined the police department in 2012.
Kashmir’s inspector general of police Munir Khan confirmed that the policeman ran away with four rifles from his post. He said Naved fled from the post when his colleagues were offering prayers.
Khan said a case has been registered and manhunt has been launched to trace the absconding policeman.
Soon after the incident, police party led by district police chief rushed to the spot to conduct an investigation into the matter.
A senior police official said the Naved decamped with his own and three other self-loading rifles of his colleagues. “His colleagues found him missing along with rifles and immediately brought it into the notice of their higher-ups,” he said.
Earlier this month, militants entered the guard room in Shopian court complex and snatched five assault rifles from the policemen there. In 2015, a cop-turned militant Naseer Ahmad Pandit of the 11 battalion of J&K Armed Police, who was posted at the guard room of PDP minister Altaf Bukhari’s residence decamped with two AK-47 rifles.
