Kulgam: Amid pro-freedom slogans, a group of five militants appeared during the funeral of slain militant commander Fayaz Ahmad in Kulgam’s Qaimoh on Sunday.
The militants fired volley of bullets in air as a mark of respect to their fallen comrade.
Participation of militants in funeral has been reported in past as well but it is for the first time their photos were shared widely on social media.
A senior photojournalist who covered funerals of militants said that militants would stop them from clicking their pictures if they would appear on the spot.
The militants’ presence at the funeral created excitement among people who swarmed them while raising anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.
Hundreds of people participated in the funeral.
Police said the slain militant was wanted by National Investigation Agency in 2015 Udhampur attack case as he is believed to have ferried militants to the spot.
“He was active from last two years and was involved in many subversive activities. He remained active in his local area and motivated youth to join militant ranks. He used to provide logistic support for safe passage of militants and their associates.”
“He was working as over ground worker of militant outfit before his name surfaced in Udhampur attack case,” a senior police official said. After the attack, he went into hiding and was carrying a bounty of Rs 2 lac on his head. Initially police mistook him for a civilian till a grenade and pistol was recovered from his possession.
