Srinagar: Four persons, including a policeman and a militant, were killed in Kulgam district on Saturday evening, police said.
Deputy inspector general of police south Kashmir range SP Pani told Kashmir Reader that an accident between two vehicles had occurred at Mir Bazar on the highway when militants attacked the police party. “A police constable was killed on the spot,” he said.
Soon after the attack, forces rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.
“A combing operation was launched immediately to track them (militants) down,” the police said.
Chief medical officer Anantnag Fazil Kochak said that four persons were brought dead to the district hospital. “Apart from them, three injured cops were admitted to the hospital as well. Later, they were shifted to army hospital,” he said.
PTI quoting police reported that the policemen retaliated and there was an exchange of fire. The gunfight left dead a policeman and three others, including a militant, it said.
The militants have stepped up attacks against forces in south Kashmir. On Thursday, militants attacked army soldiers in Shopian resulting in death of a civilian driver, who according to his family was forcibly taken away by soldiers to ferry them for military crackdown in the district.
On Monday, Hizbul Mujahideen militants attacked cash van in Kulgam district, killing five policemen and two bank guards.
