Srinagar: A Baramulla court on Wednesday extended the judicial remand of incarcerated pro-freedom leader Masarat Alam Bhat, up to May 15.
A Hurriyat Conference (G) leader and the chairman of Muslim League, Bhat has been behind the bars since 2010 for his alleged involvement in spearheading the uprising that year. He was released for a short period in 2015. He is lodged in district jail Baramulla under FIR No 52/2017 U/S 120 B and 13 Unlawful Activities Act.
The FIR pertains to possession of cell phones inside jail premises. Police had arrested Bhat minutes after he was granted bail by a local court in Baramulla on similar charges in FIR number 258 of 2016 registered against Alam at Police Station Baramulla under various sections of RPC.
Since October 2010, Alam has been granted bail in 46 separate FIRs, but has remained in detention. He has also been incarcerated under the infamous public safety act 34 times since 1990.
