11 years on, work on damaged Uri bridge still incomplete

Baramulla: Eleven years ago, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) started re-construction of the Nand Singh Bridge (NS Bridge), on Srinagar-Muzafarabad road, near Uri town of district Baramulla. The bridge is still incomplete.
The 2005 earthquake had damaged the bridge, leaving it unsafe for traffic. It cut off several Uri villages for a while before Indian army installed a temporary iron bridge for the movement of vehicles. But the iron bridge was damaged by the 2014 flash floods. Villagers apprehend that they might again be cut off as the iron bridge will likely be declared unsafe for traffic as well.
BRO had handed over the construction of NS Bridge to a contractor, but he abandoned work only after few months, say the villagers. They say that the only visible construction work on the bridge till now has been the “welding of few tons of iron”.
Gulam Qadir, a resident of Uri, said, “We appealed authorities to complete the new bridge as soon as possible to avoid any manor accident”. But work has not progressed, he said.
