Assault on nomads shocking, unacceptable: NC

Srinagar: Opposition National Conference (NC) on Saturday termed the attack on nomad cattle-herders at Talwara in Jammu by cow-vigilantes as “hooliganism” patronized by the PDP-BJP alliance. The party said the delay in arresting the attackers was unfortunate.
“The attack was shocking and unacceptable,” senior NC leader, Mian Altaf, said. “The delay in arrests was unfortunate. The statement that these culprits have been identified but are yet to be apprehended is unfortunate and indicates an effort to cover up this incident”. He said that police should act as per law “without any pressures from those quarters who patronize such hooliganism”.
Altaf bemoaned the reports suggesting that a ten-year-old boy belonging to the nomad family was missing and a nine-year-old girl was seriously injured in the assault. “What type of goons can have it in their heart to mercilessly beat up a nine-year-old girl to further their politics of communal vitriol and majoritarianism?” the NC leader said.
A statement issued by NC in Srinagar on Saturday expressed solidarity with the victim families. Quoting Altaf, the statement said, that the PDP-BJP alliance had “nurtured disruptive, anti-social and communal elements” who spread “hatred and communal disharmony” in the State.
“This incident is not an isolated incident but is yet another inglorious chapter in the PDP-BJP alliance’s politics of polarization and suppression” Altaf said. “Nomads and other minorities in Jammu are being targeted under a well thought out plan to persecute them into submission. This policy of brutality and barbarism has started to backfire and will result in the complete obliteration of this alliance”.
NC Spokesperson, Junaid Azim Mattu, has also expressed anguish over the “brutal attack”. Matoo asked police leadership to “shun their ideological affiliations and leanings” in dispensing their duties to protect the lives of citizens.
“Mere statements from police won’t suffice anymore. There is an ever widening trust deficit,” Matoo said in the statement. He said the fact that “police leadership now visits the BJP office in Jammu to be briefed by Madhav”, who has a “nihilistic and anti-Kashmir ideology”, further perpetuated the pcrception. “Police should act in a transparent manner in ensuring these goons get an exemplary punishment”.
