Voting station in Budgam set on fire

Budgam: A school building serving as a polling station for Sunday’s by-poll in Budgam district was set on fire Friday night. Stones were also hurled at a polling staff in Beerwah area.
Police said unidentified people late Friday night tried to burn the government middle school building in Yaripora village of Budgam district. “The fire was immediately controlled and the building has only suffered minor damages,” said a senior police officer.
In a separate incident, a polling staff was attacked with stones at Beerwah in Budgam when he was on his way to the polling station.
Locals said that clashes broke out in the main market of Beerwah when paramilitary forces were travelling in a vehicle towards the voting stations where they were pelted with stones by youths and they fired teargas shells to disperse the youth.
The clashes caused all business establishments in the area to be shut down.
Clashes also erupted between youth and government forces after a motorcade ferrying polling staff was attacked with stones in Hayatpora area of Chadoora. Sources said that government forces resorted to teargas shelling after youth pelted with stones the troops escorting polling staff. The election staff was safely shifted to the Government High School Hayatpora where a polling station has been set up.
