Acid attacker arrested in Handwara, victim stable

Handwara: In a prompt action, police in north Kashmir’s Handwara area tracked down and arrested a man accused of throwing acid on a woman a day after his fled away after committing the crime.  Police said 26-year-old  Ajaz Ahmad Dar son of Gulam Hasan Dar of Palpora village in Langate was arrested for attempting to burn the face of a 25-year-old woman who lived in his neighbourhood.
On Tuesday Dar attempted to splash sulphuric acid on the woman who received miraculously escaped with minor burn injuries. She was immediately shifted to a local hospital and after being given first aid she was shifted to Baramulla district hospital. He condition is reported to be stable.
Superintendent of police Handwara Gulam Jeelani Wani told reporters at police station Kralpora that a team of police headed by SDPO Handwara Shabir Ahmad Khan and SHO Kralgund Mohammad Azam Khan arrested the accused within 22 hours after committing the crime. Police have registered a case under FIR number 14/2017 under section 307 RPC.
Wani said that a Special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident and collect proofs against the accused. He said the Dar was next door neighbour of the victim and was chasing her for some time with ill intentions.
