Legislator Rasheed holds rally against Modi, demands plebiscite

SRINAGAR: Protesting the visit of prime minister of India to Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, independent MLA and patron of Awami Ittihad Party, Engineer Rasheed said that Narendra Modi should stop misleading world community of Kashmir being a developmental issue and should hold a clear referendum for the resolution of Kashmir.
Addressing the party workers while holding a sit-in here, Rasheed called the visit as “nothing but a desperate attempt to mislead the world community”.
“He should understand that Kashmir has enough resources that it could even feed millions of Indians who don’t even have access to basic food. We don’t beg you for anything but seeking our birth right of right to self determination is a legitimate demand. Today or tomorrow, India has to hold a referendum in Jammu & Kashmir,” Rasheed said.
Carrying black flags and placards asking for right to self determination and an end to “state terrorism” in Kashmir, the protestors were chanting slogans-hold referendum now’, ‘go Modi go back’ and ‘Sang Parivar down down’.
“Indians should come out of habit of calling Kashmir as an internal issue or a problem of unemployment or lack of development.  “Kashmir is a political problem and needs a political solution. Before the situation goes out of hands, Indian establishment should fulfill the promise and hold referendum in Kashmir,” he said.
Retorting the remarks by the Indian government of Kashmir being an integral part of India, he said that Modi should understand that J&K was a sovereign and independent state when India and Pakistan were not even born.
“United India’s freedom from British has left Kashmiris bleeding and their wounds cannot be healed by so called packages. We have enough resources here, even if J&K is allowed to use just 50 percent of its resources independently, it would feed even billions of Indians,” he said
