SRINAGAR: Hailing the statement of spokesman for UN Secretary General António Guterres on Kashmir, the Hurriyat Conference on Saturday said the situation in Kashmir needs much more than statements.
Media quoted the spokesman for Antonio Guterres having said that UN Secretary General is concerned over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and is keeping watch over the events in the territory.
The Hurriyat in a statement issued here appealed the UN Secretary General to “come forward proactively and make serious efforts for the resolution of the long-pending dispute of Jammu and Kashmir which is the only way to save the people of Kashmir from the present plight and bring peace and stability in the region”.
“Kashmir has been the oldest dispute on UN agenda and the world body has passed several resolutions on its floor wherein it has pledged to solve the Kashmir dispute according to the wishes and aspirations of its people,” it said.
The amalgam said due to world body’s “indifference” towards the (Kashmir) issue, the people of this region are suffering. “India has unleashed terror on Kashmiris to muzzle their voice and make them give up their political struggle. As such, it is the responsibility of UN to take steps which would aid in resolving this dispute,” he said.
Meanwhile, the spokesman of the conglomerate strongly condemned the government for conducting large-scale crackdown on youth across Kashmir especially in the Old City and Maisuma during nocturnal raids.
“Government is deliberately pushing youth and resistance leadership towards the wall so as to aid the conducting of sham polls. The oppression and large-scale arrests would not deter the people to retreat from the demand of right to self –determination,” he said.
The spokesman also denounced the house arrest of conglomerate’s chairman Dr Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the arrest and house arrest of resistance leaders Syed Ali Geelani, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza, Advocate Shahidul Islam and Hurriyat activists Farooq Ahmad Saudagar, Abdul Rashid Tanki and others. “The arrest and house arrest of resistance leadership and youth is not going to weaken their resolve towards freedom struggle,” he said.
The spokesman also condemned the blast in Para Chinar Pakistan saying such “cowardly acts” were being carried out by the anti-Pakistan elements to destablise the country. He prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured in the blast.
