Ganderbal: Ganderbal: Work on a two-storey building for Government Secondary School Gagangir Sonamarg has been on for three years, with no completion in sight while the school has been operating from a borrowed rundown building.
Students say the building is on the verge of collapse putting the lives of students as well as the teachers at risk.
The school authorities said they had raised this issue with authorities but no action was taken by the higher authorities. “We have been toiling hard to give our best to these children but working in an atmosphere where basic infrastructure is lacking affects the delivery of education. In these times of technological innovations, the students here are not able to get even basic facilities,” a teacher at the school said.
Although the construction of the new building has reached to the roof level, but local residents say work has abandoned altogether for the past many months.
“The under construction building is in shambles and has become hub of illegal activities,” Mushtaq Ahmad, a local resident said. Kaisar Ahmad Shah, the contractor engaged by R&B for construction of building said that the work has been stopped due to non-payment of dues.
He said that he woud able to resume the work on the building oonly after the previous liabilities are cleared.
AEE R&B Kangan Khurshid Ahmad Pandith said that maximum construction work of the building has been completed.
“We are going to construct pending work of the roof of the building very soon and it is sure that we will get it completed in coming days.” Pandith said.
Deputy CEO Ganderbal Nazir Ahmad said the work on the building was delayed because of a revised cost of construction.
“The estimate has been revised and more funds have been made available for the construction of the school and its completion is expected very soon,” Ahmad said. According to officials the work on the building began in 2014, and its estimated cost was revised from 45 lakh to 55 lakh.
