Awantipora: Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants were gunned down by police in Padgampora village of Awantipora on Sunday.
The deceased militants have been identified as Shahbaz Ahmed Wani alias Rayees Kachru of Belo village in Rajpora area of Pulwama district and Farooq Ahmed Hurra of Naazneenpora village in Shopian district.
Speaking to the media at police station Awantipora, Kashmir Inspector General of Police SJM Gilani said a police team led by a senior police official, after attending a meeting with Chief Electoral Officer regarding the upcoming polls, was returning from Pulwama to Awantipora.
“In the meantime, militants travelling in a Maruti car opened fire on the party as soon as they spotted them,” the IGP said.
He said the policemen retaliated and in the process two militants were killed.
The bodies of the militants were recovered from the car. Gillani said a third militant escaped in the melee.
He said police had no prior information about the movement of militants.
Police has recovered two rifles, one AK-47 and one SLR and other ammunition from the militants, Gillani said. The SLR had been looted from a police picket last year in Pulwama.
The silver colour Maruti 800 car, bearing registration number JK13 A-0764, in which these militants were travelling had blood splattered all over the seats and many gunshot piercings on sides and roof. The car had probably hit some concrete wall as its right front side of car had been badly damaged.
The brain matter and tufts of hair of the deceased had been splattered on the front seat.
As soon as the news about killing of the militants spread, hundreds of people hit streets and raised pro-freedom slogans. Police lobbed tear gas shells triggering clashes in Awantipora, Padgampora and Belo area.
The funeral prayers of both militants, according to locals, will be held on Monday.
