Anantnag: Tassaduq Mufti, brother of chief minister Mehbooba Mufi and contestant for Anantnag parliamentary seat, asked party workers on Saturday not to risk their lives in the upcoming by poll.
In his first public address after filing nomination for the seat, Tassaduq said, “I put my supporters first. You will make me win but not at the cost of your lives. All of you will ensure your safety and if I win this election it will be good and if not then also I will be working more vigorously.”
“I will be meeting my supporters more often and we wish to bring more changes. If I become the member of the parliament or not the win is ours anyways,” he added.
Since this was his maiden address to a gathering in south Kashmir, Tassaduq was expected to talk at length, but his speech lasted no more than three minutes.
He was supposed to address a press conference also but, along with other PDP leaders, hastily left the venue after ending his address.
Finance minister Haseeb Drabu, PDP president Sartaj Madani, revenue minister Abdul Rehman Veeri were present at the workers convention organised at Anantnag Dak Bungalow.
The convention was a modest gathering of a few hundred workers, some of whom had ‘resigned’ during last year’s uprising that was the most intense and widespread in south Kashmir.
Anantnag seat fell vacant after Mehbooba Mufti, who had been elected to parliament from this seat, was sworn in as chief minister in January 2016. Elections are scheduled on April 12.
“I am thankful to all senior leaders who have put their faith in me,” Tassaduq told the workers.
PDP Youth president Waheed Para, in his address, said, “Our workers have to brave stone throwers, militants and Hurriyat. Still they support and stay with their party.”
“Our workers have to face different challenges on ground and they are supposed to come to such rallies and meetings covertly. We have to change this. Our party is committed to finding a resolution for Kashmir issue by being a bridge for India and Pakistan.”
Abdul Gani Dar, a PDP supporter from Veeri, Bijbehara, said, “Our area witnessed development all because of the efforts of late Mufti sahab. I see his aura in Tassaduq sahib.”
“Earlier we had to live under the fear of army and task force who would annoy us every now and then but during Mufti Saahab’s reign all those force were contained. His short reign was an era of peace and development for us and hopefully Tassaduq sahab will live up to our expectations just like his father”, said another supporter Gulzar Shah.
