Authorities trying to weaken centrality of Jamia Masjid: Mirwaiz

SRINAGAR: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Sunday slammed authorities for time and again sealing Jamia Masjid saying this is done to “weaken its centrality”.
As per a statement issued here, Mirwaiz, who is also the president of Awami Action Committee (AAC), presided over a meeting of its working and central committee members during which discussions were held on prevailing political situation in the valley “in the context of people’s ongoing political struggle”.
On the occasion, Mirwaiz condemned the sealing of Jamia Masjid by government forces particularly on Fridays saying, “It is an effort to weaken the centrality of the Jamia Masjid as its pulpit advocates the political aspirations of Kashmiris since centuries.”
The participants also expressed grief over the killings including that of a 15-year-old Amir Nazir by government forces in past few days and extended sympathy to the bereaved families and prayed for deceased souls.
“The ban on peaceful political activities of pro-freedom leaders, curbs on peaceful protests, unabated use of pellet guns, killings, torture, arrests, detentions, repeated impositions of restrictions and other measures adopted by ruling class to suppress the freedom movement is condemnable and inhuman,” the meeting observed. It said Kashmir dispute was neither a law and order problem nor a bilateral territorial issue between India and Pakistan but about the political future of the people of Jammu Kashmir for which they are fighting. “At international level, there is more awareness and concern regarding the situation in Kashmir and much work needs to be done to channelise it to put pressure on Indian leadership to  shun its obduracy and resolve the issue. This would be in the interest of all parties involved in the dispute and give stability to the region to focus on progress and growth which both Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharief want for their respective countries and people.”
On the occasion, Mirwaiz termed the unity and commitment among the leadership and people as significant and inevitable and stressed upon the leaders, workers, and activists of AAC to play a positive and proactive role in the struggle besides reach out to people.
