Sopore: A father of five daughters, Showkat Ahmad Lone, resident of Edipora Bomai in Sopore, has been missing for the past eight days but the Bomai police station has refused to file a missing report, his family told Kashmir Reader.
On March 1, 38-year-old Showkat Ahmad Lone, a manager at Wular Candles in Sopore, left his home saying that he was going to Rohama to the house of his friend who had lost his grandfather. Showkat never reached there and has been missing since then. The last time he was seen was by his neighbours at the local bus stand in Sopore in the afternoon.
“We tried to call him but his phone was switched off. We searched for him by contacting all our relatives and also called his friend to whose house he was going to. We contacted his office but no one there could help us,” Showkat’s brother Abdul Hameed Lone said.
In June last year, Showkat was picked up by the police on charges of providing food to militants and put in jail under the Public Safety Act. He was released on November 7, 2016. When he was released, Showkat bore marks of torture, his family says.
“His forehead was burnt on a stove and marks of stitches were clearly visible on it. His hands were broken. Immediately after his release, we took him to the hospital and an operation was performed on his hands,” Abdul Hameed told Kashmir Reader.
Showkat has five daughters, the eldest 16 years old and the youngest in her third year.
“When we went to Bomai police station to lodge a missing report, the police there flatly refused. After repeated visits to the police station, they said that your brother has gone missing from Sopore, so lodge the missing report in Sopore police station. When we visited the Sopore police station, they told us to go to SSP Baramulla’s office. There we were not even allowed to go inside,” Abdul Hameed said.
“We don’t know what we should do. We are making rounds from one police station to another to lodge a missing report of our brother,” Abdul Hameed said.
When contacted, the SHO of Bomai police station, Abdul Majeed, said that Showkat Ahmad Lone had gone missing in Sopore, so the report has to be filed at Sopore police station.
