IJT condemns ‘selective’ police action against Muslim students in Jammu

SRINAGAR: Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba Jammu and Kashmir (IJT) has strongly condemned the “selective” police action against Muslim students of Maulana Azad Memorial (MAM) College, Jammu.
In a statement issued here, IJT President, Umar Sultan, while condemning the detention of Mohammed Israr, Rabnawaz, Fazal, Murtaza, Zulfiqar, Sheraz and Mumtaz, has demanded their immediate and unconditional release from police custody.
He also demanded withdrawal of FIR lodged against Muslim students and “necessary disciplinary” action against the police officers who resorted to “dereliction of duty by selectively targeting Muslim students to satisfy the politically-motivated demands of the communal elements”.
“The IJT has expressed serious concern over the media reports that the FIR was lodged against Muslim students at the behest of some BJP Ministers, who had come in support of ABVP, the party’s student wing,” Sultan said.
IJT President said the students in Jammu campuses are subjected to “worst kind of communal harassment” and a kind of chilling effect is being created to scare away Muslim students from educational institutions.
“It is unfortunate and highly unprofessional that police has lodged an FIR against these Muslim students merely on fake news or a rumor of death of a student. IJT warns against the attempts to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere of campuses across Jammu and Kashmir by divisive and communal forces that are hell bent on harming the communal harmony and geographical integrity of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
“These alien tendencies are being imported to Jammu and Kashmir at the behest of forces who flourish in polarised society,” Sultan said, adding, “Attempts are made to divide the society on religious lines to reap political benefits.”
