Geelani urges writers to use Kashmiri language to ‘glorify resistance’

Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani on Wednesday said that Kashmiri language has been perpetually ignored by the rulers that resulted into its lagging behind. In a statement Geelani said that importance of Arabic, Urdu, and Persian can’t be ignored and any kind of ignorance or negligence towards these languages can prove disastrous for our specific Muslim identity.
In the context of international mother tongue day that was celebrated on Tuesday Geelani said the language has always played vital and central role in glorifying the civilized societies. He said different languages serve as great signs and symbols from Almighty Allah and It is a social movement built on the spirit to defend the rights to write in one’s mother language.
Deliberating on the state of Kashmiri language, Geelani said Kashmir has remained under foreign occupation since long and as such all political, social, economic issues including the Kashmiri language remained unnoticed for long periods.  “It is educated class that nourishes languages. We were unfortunate that our state was occupied by occupants and as such we were treated as slaves and with the result we failed to produce Sheikh Nooruddin Wali (ra)-like saintly and learned men. He was a man with mission who for divine purpose and religious teachings used Kashmiri language as the key media,” Geelani said.
“Mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop taste for promotion of ethical values in society,” he said.
Commenting over the present day scenario, Geelani said that although literacy rate has touched new heights, our intellectuals, writers, poets are still presenting rhetoric about so-called progressive literature and restricted Kashmiri languages to romantic poetry and fiction only.
“Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our rich heritage,” Geelani said adding his appeal to authors, scholars, poets and writers urged to contribute for revival of religious identification, moral values, rich social tradition and use this language for glorification and promotion of resistance movement.
