Srinagar: Former Member of Parliament (MP) and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Tariq Hameed Karra on Saturday joined the Congress party in New Delhi, a move he claimed was made necessary because the PDP-BJP government was implementing the “RSS agenda” in jammu and Kashmir.
Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee President GA Mir, who was present on the occasion of Karra’s joining the Congress, said that Karra formally joined the party in the Congress office at New Delhi in the presence of party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
“Bot the president and vice president of Congress welcomed him with open arms,” Mir told Kashmir Reader. “Karra is now formally a member of Congress.”
Karra resigned from his Lok Sabha seat and from the PDP during the summer uprising last year.
Talking to the media in Delhi, Karra said that the PDP was backing the agenda of the BJP which is dictated by the RSS. “People in the state never accepted the inroads made by the RSS in state politics using the PDP-BJP alliance as a tool,” Karra told reporters.
“The alliance between PDP and BJP had necessitated realignment of political forces in the state. The Kashmir issue has been put in deep slumber by the ruling alliance,” he added.
A founder member of the PDP along with the late Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, Karra had submitted his resignation from the Lok Sabha in September last year to protest the excesses being committed by security forces in quelling widespread protests after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani.
The resignation was accepted by the Lok Sabha secretariat in November last year.
