Bengaluru: Welcoming the calm on the India-Pakistan border, Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday said New Delhi desired good ties with Islamabad and Beijing.
Asked about the border situation, the minister said, “Can any country have a problem if there is peace in the neighbourhood? Keeping calm does not mean you should not be prepared,” he said.
Parrikar was speaking to the media on the sidelines of Aero India 2017 here.
India wanted peace with both Pakistan and China, he said.
“We wish to have a good relationship with Pakistan and China. No reasons why we should keep fighting with them.”
He said the government will create a new technology innovation fund for defence aerospace aimed to prop up start-ups.
“We are initiating a defence innovation fund with an initial contribution from HAL and BEL,” Parrikar said referring to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). “The fund will support innovation and technology development in identifying areas and will be open to both Indian and foreign firms,” Parrikar said. He hoped that the fund will propel start-ups.
“The focus will be on start-ups to enable a culture of innovation,” Parrikar said without specifying the quantum.
