SRINAGAR: Students from Jammu and Kashmir studying at Aligarh Muslim University organised a football tournament in memory of Aamir Nazir Latoo.
Hailing from Ahangar Moholla, Bijbehera in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, Aamir Nazir Latoo was pursuing his post-graduation (M.Com) at AMU and was in 3rd semester when he was killed by government forces on July 11 during last year’s uprising. He succumbed to his injuries at SMHS Srinagar the next day.
As per a statement issued here, the students paid tributes to Aamir and described him a “modest and passionate about Kashmir’s resistance movement”.
The tournament started on February 10 in which 16 teams from different halls of residence at AMU participated. “All teams had a Kashmiri touch in their names like Bungus Gladiators, Pir Panchal FC, Kashmir United, Kashmir Riders, Palhallan Warriors, Mazloom Koshur etc.” the statement said.
The statement added, “Although the participants were not well versed with football but they showed a great zeal and zest during the whole tournament. The final match of the tournament was played between Sangarmaal Warriors and Bijbehara Challengers on February 14 in which the latter emerged victorious. The trophies were given to winner and runner up teams and medals to the players of both teams. Also, a special memento was given to Man of the Match Afaq Ahmad and Man of the Tournament Zahid Ahmad. More than 300 students from J&K along with some other students of AMU were present during the final match.”
The students also organise annual cricket tournament for the last 15 years in memory of Abdul Rouf, a Ph.D scholar at Department of Arabic, AMU, “who hails from Sopore and was killed by Army when he was on his way to home from Aligarh on December 25, 2000”.
The students said the initiative (of Aamir Memorial Football Tournament) is aimed at remembering “our fellow Alig and fellow Kashmiri and in no way was meant for entertainment because it is one of the best ways to remember our brother and carry his love in our hearts. This event will be held every year with same zeal”.
Special prayers were also held in favour of Aamir Latoo.
