Snowmelt choked drains, inundated roads in Baramulla, Pattan, Sopore

Baramulla: The snowmelt and rainwater has wreaked havoc on the drainage system at several places in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district causing immense problems to the local population.
Locals said that several areas remained under dirty water but the authorities did not push in men and machinery to drain out the inundating water.
Reports from Sopore, Pattan, Khawaja Bagh, Old town Baramulla and Sheeri market said that all the places were under stagnant water due to the failure of drainage systems in the areas causing commoners a plethora of problems.
Javid Ahmad, a local of Baramulla town said that all the drains are choked and dirty water is overflowing on the Srinagar Muzaffarabad road from Khawajabagh to Uri bus stand. This is causing the students, patients, old age people and womenfolk a lot of problems while
Residents from Sopore and Pattan areas said that marketplaces resemble oceans and people face hardships in walking or negotiating their vehicles.
Gulam Ahmad Khan, a shopkeeper of Pattan said, “After heavy snowfall and rains, all the drains were blocked and water entered into residential areas. The overflowing water has inundated the main road but the government departments including municipal committee, roads and buildings department and beacon project (responsible for upkeep of the highway) are nowhere to be seen.
The locals said that several telecom companies vandalized the roads for installation of cables and left the roadsides unattended later.
