Geelani condemns aide’s arrest

SRINAGAR: All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Syed Ali Geelani has condemned the arrest of secretary Dawat-u-Tableeg, Bashir Ahmad Qureshi in Kupwara for leading a march on the anniversary of Kupwara massacre on Friday.
Describing the arrest as “extreme vandalism” akin to “martial law”, Geelani said that peaceful political leaders were arrested on one pretext or the other.
A Hurriyat statement said that after special prayers to commemorate the victims of Kupwara massacre,  Qureshi and Zahoor-ul-Haq lead a procession demanding fair investigation and “stringent action against those involved in gruesome massacre.
“As soon as the procession reached main chowk, police swung into action and beside resorting to unproportionate force, arrested Bashir Ahmad Qureshi,” the statement said.
Geelani said that authorities are “trampling all ethics and norms despite their tall claims for democracy and ‘Battle of Idea’s’”.
“Their rhetoric for democracy are hoax and instead (they) strangulate genuine voices of people. They are scared and do not tolerate the people’s assembly to remember these martyrs of nation,” Geelani said.
Geelani added that while hundreds of youth were still languishing in different jails, police lockups and “torture centers”, “Instead of releasing these detainees, administration is arresting more and more youth”.
“All these arbitrary arrests have led to uncertainty in state and the situation is deteriorating with every passing day” he said, and appealed international bodies for human rights to “break their silence and take cognizance of these violations and lawlessness, created by authorities under the garb of so called maintenance of law and order”.
Meanwhile Geelani expressed grief over the loss of lives due to heavy snowfall and avalanches hitting residential houses in Gurez and adjoining areas. Extending his heartfelt condolences to affected families, Geelani appealed affluent families to “extend their generous support” to the affected people.
