Kupwara: Two suspected drug peddlers were arrested in Kupwara Monday and contraband substances worth lakhs of rupees was recovered from their possession, police said Tuesday.
The accused have been identified as Faisal Ahmad and Fayaz Ahmad, both residents of Drugmulla.
Superintendent of Police, Kupwara, Shamsher Hussain, told reporters that police recovered poppy straw and charas worth lakhs of rupees from the shop of accused Fayaz at Drugmulla market.
“Fayaz, who is the kingpin of the group and involved in the unlawful activity for quite some time was apprehended today. We have constituted separate police teams to arrest a few more accused involved in drugs peddling. Police had been following the accused for some time and they were finally apprehended,” Hussain told reporters.
“We have intensified drive against drug peddlers in the district and few more arrests are likely to follow in next few days,” he said.
DSP headquarters Mohammad Ramzan said that Fayaz’s bother was also picked up on suspicion but released later after questioning.
According to a police official, around 2.5 kg of charas, 300 grams of poppy straw, and Rs 7000 cash were recovered from the accused. A case under FIR No 10/ 2017 NDPS has been registered in police station Kupwara.
