Cold shock for patients at Chest Diseases Hospital

Heating arrangement schedule leave nights out
By Sumiya Shah
Srinagar: As Kashmir Valley reels under intense cold, patients admitted at the Chest Diseases Hospital (CD) complain that the management was making them suffer in the absence of proper heating facilities.
The hospital management says it provides heating facility for five hours in the morning and six in the evening but patients allege that they were not getting heating facilities even according to the schedule.
“We are not getting proper heating facilities in the hospital. In evening we get heating facility for four hours only. During night, when we are shivering in immense cold, no heating facility is provided,” said Ghulam Hassan, a patient admitted in ward 5 of CD Hospital.
Many patients and their attendants pointed out that for patients suffering from asthma and other lung diseases, cold conditions were detrimental for health, and wondered how the hospital management could ignore the fact.
Imran Ahmad, who is attending to his father admitted in the hospital for last few days, said that absence of heating facility during night was ‘inhumane’.
The condition of asthmatics and patients with chronic obstructive lung diseases worsens in hospitals because of cold.
“Tuberculosis and Asthma patients are the worst sufferers in the hospital who come from far off places of Kashmir to get medical attention. Instead of cure the patients get more ill because of cold,” a doctor on duty confided, asking not to be named.
Medical Superintendent, CD Hospital, Dr Naveed Nazir Shah, told Kashmir Reader that the hospital could provide round the clock heating facility because of budget constraints.
“We have pasted notices in all the wards if there is any problem regarding the heating arrangement, the patients should inform the doctor on duty, but nobody has come up with the com[plaint that heating facility is not working in scheduled hours,” Dr Shah said.
“Due to budget constraints we cannot provide heating facility for 24 hours. If we get enough budgets we have no issue in arranging heating facility for whole day and night”.
