Kupwara: Residents of Khanbal village in Kupwara district on Friday protested against the failure of district administration to clear snow from the road connecting it with nearby Kralpora town and the rest of the district headquarters.
The protestors, including women and children, also blamed authorities for death of Taj-u-Din, 22, a local resident, who according to them fell ill but could not be removed to Kralpora hospital on Monday as the road was blocked due to heavy snowfall.
“We carried him on stretcher for at least two kilometers from home but he died on way to the hospital. Had the authorities cleared snow from road, his life could have been saved,” said Alam Din, father of deceased.
The protestors said, the village situated 24 km from Kupwara, has been cut off from the rest of district due to snow. Around two feet of snow is still accumulated on the road leading to the village.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Abdul Hafeez Shah told Kashmir Reader that snow cutters would “be pressed into service this evening to clear snow from the road. “The village is far from district headquarters but authorities will make efforts to address problems of local residents,”
