Jammu : Police prevented legislator Engineer Rasheed on Friday from visiting Pir Panjaal region of Jammu, fearing attack from right-wing Hindu parties. Rasheed, legislator from north Kashmir’s Langate constituency and chairman of Awami Itihad Party (AIP) was detained at Sundarbani, where heavy contingent of police was deployed to prevent him from visiting the areas. He was detained for 8 hours before sending him back to Jammu.
While briefing about the incident over phone to Kashmir Reader, Rasheed said,’’ I had organised a two day political programme in Rajouri, Poonch and Kalakote and to pay visit to the home of Ishtaq Ahmad Choudhary and other two innocent women who were killed in cold blood by the members of VCD ( village defence committee) last year.
“Despite informing my schedule to the higher officials of police, I was detained at different places for hours and humiliated by police,’’ Rasheed said.
“Police told that BJP and people of Sangh Parivaar have come out on roads and they may pose threat for you, in these circumstances you are not allowed in the area,’’ he quoted the police officers as saying.
Accusing the BJP –PDP government of being stooge of the right wing Rasheed said,’’ Coalition government is suppressing the voice of Muslim minority in Jammu province and communalizing the state machinery, boosting them for hooliganism,’’
Accusing the Jammu Police for working on the direction of Hindu zealots and being their bee teams, he said was not allowed to move forward as argued of having life threats in the area, which is called a bastion for BJP and Sangh Parivaar.
