Srinagar: Protests against domicile certificates to West Pakistan Refugees in Jammu and Kashmir will continue, the united resistance leadership said on Monday, calling it a “matter of life and death.”
In a sit-in and rally held here at Abi Guzar under the banner of ‘joint resistance leadership’, several pro-freedom leaders called the move to issue domicile certificates to WPRs and recent court orders on Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest Act (SARFAESI) a “conspiracy to change the demography” of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Issuing domicile certificates to WPRs, court orders regarding the sovereignty of the state and allowing non-state banks to confiscate and hold properties in Jammu and Kashmir are issues of life and death for our national life,” a Hurriyat spokesperson said.
“The people of Kashmir cannot stay silent on the ploy to change the demography of Jammu Kashmir and turn its Muslim majority status into a minority,” the spokesperson said.
During the protest, the participants chanted pro-freedom slogans and also raised issues related to the alleged ill-treatment of Kashmiri inmates in jails and police stations. The protesters attempted to march towards city centre Lal Chowk but the procession was stopped by police near Press Enclave, where the protesters sat down on the roadside.
