North Kashmir’s bloody 2016: 88 militants, 36 troopers and 22 civilians killed; four non-local militants held

Baramulla: The year 2016 has left a trail of blood and mayhem in north Kashmir region as 88 militants, 32 army men, 3 BSF personnel, one policeman and 22 civilians were killed in separate incidents of violence. The highest number of casualties occurred in the September attack in Uri that killed 19 soldiers and brought India and Pakistan closer to declaring a war.
As many as 37 army men and over 2000 civilians have been injured in various violent incidents in the region during the year.
Statistics reveal that among the 88 slain militants, five were locals while the rest could not be identified. They are suspected to be foreign cadre of various militant outfits.
Sources said that from July 8 when the government forces killed famous Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzafar Wani along with his two associates in south Kashmir, as many as 11 civilians were killed by the government forces including army and police in the north Kashmir region. Six civilians were killed in Kupwara district, four in Baramulla while as one person got killed in Bandipora district. In this agitation thousands of other people were injured while many of them lost their eyes due to pellet firing for ever.
Meanwhile, four non-local militants belonging to different militant outfits were arrested in several areas of north-Kashmir in 2016 by the government forces.
On February 26, Baramulla police arrested a teenager militant Mohammad Sadiq Gujjar of Sailkote from Kanispora village. On May 14t, army’s 46 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) arrested a Pakistani militant during a search operation in the forest areas of Hajibal Baramulla. The militant was later identified as Abdul Rehman Khan alias Saad. On June 20, police arrested a top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander and Pakistani nationalist militant Abu Ukasha alias Hanzullah in Sogam area. On July 27, army arrested a non local militant in Nowgam sector of Kupwara district. He was identified as Bahadur Ali of Pakistan. He was later handed over to National Investigation Agency (NIA).
On August 27, army caught a Pakistani LeT militant Sajad Hussain alias Abu Ubaidullah of Bloachistan Pakistan alive in a week long gunfight and search operation in Rafiabad area.
