Srinagar: The state government on Sunday ordered printing presses to stop printing and publication of Kashmir Reader, else punitive measures under various sections of different laws can be invoked against them.
The order, issued by district magistrate Srinagar, says that publication of the newspaper can “easily incite acts of violence and disturb peace and tranquillity”.
“On the basis of credible inputs it has been observed that the daily newspaper namely Kashmir Reader published within the jurisdiction of district Srinagar contains such material and content which tends to incite acts of violence and disturb public peace and tranquillity,” said the order.
“It has been observed that the contents published in the above Newspaper is of such nature that can easily cause incitement of acts of violence and disturbance of public tranquillity in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and Srinagar District in particular,” said the order.
“Therefore, it has become expedient in the interest of prevention of this anticipated breach of public tranquillity to forthwith take necessary precautionary measures,” the order said and asked printing presses to stop printing Kashmir Reader with immediate effect.
“There are sufficient reasons to invoke the powers vested in me by Section 144 CrPC read with Section 3 of News Papers Incitement of offences Act, 1971 and Section 10 of Press and Publication Act, 1989 and proceed further in the matter by passing a. conditional order of stopping the printing and publishing of News Paper namely “Kashmir Reader” through printing presses mentioned above,” the order said.
It is directed to Printer, Publisher and Owner of Daily Kashmir Reader to abstain from printing and Publishing of the News Paper namely “Kashmir Reader” till further orders so that disturbance of public tranquillity is prevented.
“Be it noted, that failure to do so may constrain the the DC to invoke the powers conferred under Section 3 of News Papers incitement of offence Act, 1971 and Section 10 of Press and Publication Act,1989 which contain forfeiture of the printing press and other properties used for the purpose,” it added.
At about 8.15, five policemen came to the office to serve the same order.

    Dear KR Publishing Team,
I am a regular reader of KR, RK and GK. I hope that Government shall soon revoke its order of banning the paper. All news papers have carried current news and views with utmost professionalism. Banning of KR will now certainly raise doubts about the future content of other dallies of the State, if they do not stand with KR.

Is it the fitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi’s memory today being his birthday? While the central Govt. led by Narendra Modi and the state Govt. in J&K led by his party BJP in collusion have banned the freedom of press in Kashmir in banning Kashmir Reader, come down heavily on the freedom of expression as guaranteed under the constitution. Swachchh Bharat Campaign has come to a halt in Kashmir by maligning the very spirit for which Mahatma lived. It is not given to us by the kindness of rulers of today by we the people have achieved this through the struggles of forefathers in India that it is we who are meant to protect what they have fought for and achieved. The freedom of press and freedom of information as enshrined in our constitution are not the gift given by Modijee and Mehbooba that they can withdraw at their pleasure. It must be condemned by all right minded person and also remind the people of world that while Modi plays swachchh Bharat card he is trying to cover up dirty design.

This is how our IAS officers are pleasing state and the central governments. Should be re-designated as “Indian artillery service”. What a pity for discharge of service where everything is muzzled by force and with reservations. First they slapped PSA on youth to appease the bosses to enjoy lucrative chairs and now they started to muzzle the voice of newspapers like one “Kashmir Reader” for speaking truth. Accountability missing over the months and administration working as traitors.

I have followed rising kashmir , greater kashmir and kashmir reader regularly. I find these papers fact based and there is generally a professional and clear separation of facts and opinions. In fact i find some news items totally boring which is good i guess. i hope this move is temporary. Because facts will not be changed by reportage , whereas opinions will just harden by lack of it. i will pray to ma durga for your paper.

Kashmiris of-late have seen themselves transformed into vigorous writers with amazing poetic connotations describing the blood-soaked, sanguine, contemporary political scenario of Kashmir. It has come naturally to them living in most adverse, militarized conditions a present day human can imagine. Hands which weave shawls and carpets since centuries defines their instinctive, nature loving inclinations and given that they are naturally sensitive to human sufferings.
One positive and a very bright ray of hope had emerged when cable operators launched local news channels – SEN news, JK News, Vaadi News and many others. Talented orators would discuss politics with razor sharp precision and soon Indian News channels would see their viewership diminished to near zero atleast in the valley. All the channels were subsequently banned and now same fate is awaiting the print media of Kashmir valley.

My family is eagerly waiting for Kashmir Reader every single day. In fact my father picks up the newspaper from the doorstep as soon as he returns form the Fajr prayers. What we found out the fact that KR is the only genuine newspaper which gives the authentic news and really loves to highlight the plight of the oppressed people. Draconian indian laws can not silence the voice of the millions. We want KASHMIR READER for the betterment of Kashmiri people. I strongly protest against this order proclaimed by the shameless indian puppets. All the journalistic fraternity should fight this tooth and nail otherwise others will also suffer soon.

supression does not lead to anything good. We have seen this in most of the middle east countries where there is no freedom of press. by banning such voices, the Indian government is supressing one of the key pillars of any democracy. I hope they reverse this ASAP.

On other hand its a stupid decision as the indian govenmenrt will now get more negative attention from human rights and other governments.

Kashmiri press media is suppressed & subjugated to dismay the distant dream of kashmiri’s. these political scapegoats use their utmost imperialistic might to deceive the subjects for none of their faults. Kashmir Reader, though still in it’s infancy of expanding it’s horizons has done most commendable job by highlighting the kashmir uprising currently at it’s worst dissent. but Kashmir Reader, don’t get dismayed, truth will prevail and evilistics will perish insha’Allah.

While being in IOK for 47 days under curfew and a witness to Indian barbaric brutalities, repression and oppression of the people, I regularly read most of the News Papers to catch up with the news of atrocities committed by Indian brutal forces, I found Kashmir Reader a very informative and impartial paper sticking to accuracy and details. It reflects on the so called worlds largest democracy as to how it silences the voices of truth to prevent the true picture of it`s brutalities and oppression from being witnessed by the world. We say bravo KR and want you to know that truth will prevail and KR will be triumphant. IA.
