SRINAGAR: Police on Thursday detained 22 volunteers working in the premises of SMHS hospital. Sources said that early Thursday morning cops from Karan Nagar police station stopped several ambulances and took into custody the volunteers travelling in them.
“Cops stopped our ambulances this morning when they were on way to SMHS Hospital and detained our volunteers,” said the founding member of one of the voluntary organisations.
The founding member said that organisations had sought the permission of police for setting yp their camps inside the hospital premises but the police were saying now the permission had not been taken. “We were told that we had sought no permission to run the emergency services. But the fact is that even those who had sought permission to set up camps have been detained. Basically their aim is to evacuate us,” he said.
The ambulances which have been detained and lodged in Shaheed Gunj Police station belong to SRO Batamaloo, Athrout, Moomin Welfare Trust and some other organisations. The volunteers were later released on bail in the evening after the heads of the voluntary organisations went to the police station.
