Srinagar: At least six protesters sustained injuries and about 150 protestors were arrested by police along with Engineer Rasheed when the police foiled a march by the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) towards UN offices in Srinagar on Monday.
Hundreds of protesters defying police restrictions started a march from Regal Chowk towards UN offices in Sonawar, carrying black flags and banners and shouting slogans in favour of plebiscite. However, a large contingent of police and paramilitary forces led by SP East stopped the protestors near Sher-i-Kashmir Park and used force to disperse the protestors.
Police not only hurdled abuses at Er Rasheed and other protestors but also dragged them ruthlessly on the roads. In the scuffle with the police, twelve persons including Imtiyaz Alam, Mohammad Rafiq Malik, Ghulam Hassan Mir, Showket Ahmad Pandit, Fayaz Ahmad Reshi, and Nazir Ahmad War were badly injured. Police used force and dragged the protestors including Er Rasheed and lodged them in Kothi Bagh and other police stations. Before being arrested, Er Rasheed while talking to media said that the protest march towards UN offices was aimed at telling the world community to not listen to the lies of Sushma Swaraj when she speaks at UN today, and instead to put pressure on her to agree to the right to self-determination of Kashmiris.
“If Nawaz Sharif could say yes to plebiscite, it is mandatory on Sushma Sawaraj to respond positively and agree. If India claims to be the largest democracy in the world, what moral authority it has to crush the peaceful mass resistance in J&K?” Er Rasheed said and condemned the police action on the march. He said that Kashmir police seems to have forgotten completely its duties towards its own people and the fact that at the end of the day they can’t isolate themselves from the general masses of their own mother land. He asked J&K police to introspect and not force the masses to turn their anger towards them.
