SRINAGAR: Wasim Ahmad Lone, the 21-year-old who was killed by government forces on Friday at Nadihal village, was laid to rest in his native village on Saturday morning.
According to the residents, the body of Lone reached his village late on Friday, and was kept in a classroom of the local Government Middle School overnight.
The people, they said, arranged generators to light up the school and its surroundings, while everyone stayed up for the night.
In the morning, the body was carried in a procession to Baramulla-Kupwara highway, where he was shot dead.
After people staged a protest demonstration at the spot, the body was taken to a public ground where the local activists of Hurriyat Conference addressed the gathering before his father, Nazir Ahmad Lone, led his funeral prayers. Lone happens to be the Imam of the area.
Thousands of people from Nadihal, Chaklo, Binner, Ladoora, Watergam, Saidpora, Tragpora, and Vigibal villages participated in his funeral prayers.
Eyewitness said that pro-freedom sloganeering didn’t stop when the funeral prayers were being offered.
Lone was later laid to rest in the local martyrs’ graveyard.
Meanwhile, a complete shutdown was observed across the district, while thousands of people from the nearby villages visited Nadihal for tributes.
The reports also said that a youth, who, according to government forces, was killed in an encounter with army in Argam area of Bandipora a few days back, was buried in Gantamulla Colony here on Friday.
