Srinagar: The government has slapped draconian Public Safety Act on 175 people while at least 1400 have been arrested in the two-month long anti-India uprising.
A local news agency KNS quoting sources said the government is mulling to book above 250 people under Public Safety Act, which has been described by Amnesty International as a “lawless law”.
Last month, the government had prepared a detailed list of 169 people for their alleged role as “organisers and provocateurs” and subsequently booking them under the Act.
The Act provides for arresting and jailing a person without trial for six-month on mere suspicion that he/she may disrupt law and order in the state or may act in a manner prejudicial to the security of the state.
The authorities are also yet to decide about the release of pro-freedom leaders including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, who have been put under custody ahead of Eid.
