Body recovered from Jhelum, people mistake him for uprising victim

Offer funeral prayers twice; police say the deceased a non-Muslim

Srinagar: People on Saturday offered funeral prayers twice for a man whose body was recovered from the Jhelum, believing him to be a victim of the government forces, before the police snatched the corpse and revealed later that he was a non-Muslim, looking like a Nepali from his appearance.
The body was recovered near Gonikhan, Amira Kadal and taken to Sarai Bala, where people offered funeral prayers.
A group of people from Maisuma and nearby areas took the body to Lal Chowk, where nimaz-e-jinaza was offered the second time.
The police soon arrived at the spot and took the body in its custody after dispersing the protesting people by firing teargas canisters.
The police action caused tension in the area and shopkeepers downed their shutters. The shops had opened at 6 pm in accordance with a programme of joint resistance leadership.
“He is a non-Muslim as he was not circumcised. We found this when his autopsy was being conducted,” a police official said.
He said the body is semi-decomposed and Rs 503 were recovered from the clothes he was wearing.
