SHO leads vandalism at Bijbehara

Bijbehara: An infant was smothered with tear smoke while an elderly man with heart ailments was crushed under jackboots when a contingent of police led by notorious SHO Arshid Khan raided Karewa Sicop locality in south Kashmir’s Bijbehara town late Friday evening. Locals alleged that after ransacking houses and damaging dozens of parked vehicles, the police team warned the residents of dire consequences.
Eyewitnesses said that a posse of armed policemen entered the Sicop locality at about 6pm and without any provocation began breaking windscreens and bonnets of parked vehicles, mostly Sumo and Tavera cabs, halted in the locality due to the ongoing shutdown. The policemen also attacked 15 houses and broke their windowpanes, glasses and doors.

Residents of Sicop said that policemen entered the house of one Abdul Gani Taing, who had a pacemaker in his body to regulate his heartbeat, and beat him ruthlessly. “The cops crushed Beg under their boots and left him in writhing in pain,” a local resident told Kashmir Reader.
Residents said that the cops also barged into the house of lecturer Shabir Ahmad Taing and exploded a teargas shell inside his house where his 40-day-old daughter Dehrun Nisa was sleeping. The smoke smothered the infant who was frothing when she was taken out of the smoke-filled room. She was later referred to a local hospital.
Cops also beat up womenfolk in the locality, residents said. Two sons of Mushtaq Ahmad Taing, aged 4 and 6, were beaten up by the cops.
Kashmir Reader attempted to contact the said SHO but he was not available.
