SRINAGAR: The National Investigation Agency (NIA), the central Indian agency for combating ‘terror’, on Monday summoned Dr Nayeem Geelani, the son of chairman Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Geelani, “for purpose of answering certain questions” relating to a case.
In a handwritten letter that is in possession of Kashmir Reader, the NIA has asked Nayeem to present himself at police officers’ mess in Shivpora, Srinagar.
“Whereas it appears that you are acquainted with the circumstances of the NIA case no Rc-06/2011/NIA which is now investigated by NIA under Chapter xiv CrPC,” the letter dispatched by deputy superintendent NIA Delhi, Depender Kumar, reads. “You are hereby required to attend before the undersigned on 29.08.16 at 10.00 hrs at police officers’ mess Shivpora Srinagar for purpose of answering certain questions relating to the case.”
“We received the letter today and were asked to appear the same day,” Naseem Geelani, the brother of Nayeem, told Kashmir Reader.
The Hurriyat (G) in a statement said that Syed Ali Geelani and his family were being “terrified and maligned” in a conspiracy of “Indian imperialist agencies and their local faces.”
“NIA has been given this task just to drag these fabricated cases to Delhi, thereby pressurising the leadership. But people after rendering endless sacrifices cannot be choked by these uncivilised and inhuman tactics,” the statement reads.
“Don’t allow anybody to sabotage this precious movement. All programmes should be followed in letter and spirit and any weakness or loophole should be taken care of as we are all accountable not only to the people but to Almighty Allah as well,” the statement said.
