Kashmir: Hurriyat condemns Mirwaiz’s arrest

Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference (M) has strongly condemned the arrest and detention of its chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq , who has been lodged at Sub Jail Cheshma Shahi Srinagar. A spokesman In a statement said Mirwaiz was arrested yesterday when he broke his 49th day of house arrest to move towards Eidgah as part of the Eidgah chalo call given by the Joint Resistance Leadership and was taken to Police Station Nigeen. “At around 6.30pm he called to inform that he is being shifted from the police station to some unknown place about which he has not been informed. After that his phone was confiscated and his whereabouts could not be ascertained leading to great anxiety about his safety,” he said.
“It was around 9 pm when the family was asked by the police to give his clothes that they were informed that he has been detained and lodged at sub jail cheshma shahi,” he added.
The amalgam said that the illegal house arrest and arbitrary detention of Mirwaiz shows the governments “frustration” and failure in dealing with the people’s revolt which is being spearheaded by the joint resistance leadership including Mirwaiz, Syed Ali Geelani and Yasin Malik, the spokesman added.
