SRINAGAR: A prominent member of Mirwaiz family, Muhammad Afzal Shawl, passed away on Sunday morning in Islamabad, Pakistan. He was the son of late Ghulam Jeelani Shawl and grandson of late Saad-u-Din Shawl, a Muslim Conference leader associated with the political movement in J&K.
Late Afzal Shawl was the son-in-law of the late Mirwaiz Mohammad Nooruddin Shah, founding member of the Muslim Conference, who was exiled to Pakistan in 1947 while serving a jail sentence at the central jail Srinagar.
As the news of his demise reached Srinagar, people expressed condolences with the Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who is under continuous house arrest .
Meanwhile, Hurriyat Conference, Jammu Kashmir Awami Action Committee (AAC), Anjuman-e-Nusrat-ul-Islam, and Auqaf Jamia Masjid Srinagar in a joint statement expressed grief over the demise. They also paid tributes to the deceased and expressed solidarity with Mirwaiz and shawl families.
