Srinagar: Director General Prisons has reportedly issued an order directing the government to shift chief of Muslim League Dr Muhammad Qasim Faktoo and his associate Muhammad Shafi from Central Jail Srinagar to Humhama jail.
Official sources told news agency CNS that DG prisons had asked authorities to shift Faktoo and Muhammad Shafi to Humhama jail. Sources said that such an order was issued to prevent people from meeting the Dr Qasim Faktoo in Central Jail.
“Hundreds of people visit Central Jail to meet Dr Qasim Faktoo. The order issued by DG prisons is aimed at to bar visitors from meeting the senior separatist leaders who has been languishing in the jail from past 20 years.”
A pro-freedom leader said that the order issued by DG prisons was challenged by Bar Association led by Advocate Mian Qayoom while Justice Muhammad Yakub Mir directed the government to maintain status quo till August 15. “Court will take up our petition in which we have challenged the order of DG Prisons on August 16,” said a lawyer adding that instead of releasing Qasim Faktoo government wants to confine him in a solitary cell.
Terming the continuous detention of Muslim League chief, Muhammad Qasim Faktoo as “political vendetta” and “illegal”, DeM spokesperson said there is no justification for the government to keep him behind the bars as its own review committee had recommended his release. (CNS)
