Srinagar: Srinagar-Leh highway was thrown open for traffic on Saturday after remaining closed for more than five months.
The highway remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow. The highway was closed following snowfall and slippery road condition. Though the roads project BEACON had announced to reopen the strategically important road a month earlier, but late snowfall in March delayed the snow clearance operation.
The snow was cleared by the BEACON by pressing into service sophisticated machines and men. People travelling on the highway will have the experience to see huge walls of snow on both sides of the road, including Zojila pass.
The central government has already approved construction of a tunnel at the Zojila to make it all weather road.
Traffic authorities allowed movement of Light motor vehicles on strategic 434-km from Drass to Sonmarag in first shift from early morning to 1pm and from Sonmarag to Drass in second shift after 1 pm. Officials said that more than seven hundred LMVs were allowed to move from Sonmarag to Drass.
Officials said traffic movement on this road shall be regulated as per instructions of the Transport Department.
