Srinagar-Leh highway reopened after five months

Sonamarg: Jammu and Kashmir`s strategic Srinagar-Leh national highway was re-opened for vehicular traffic on Saturday after remaining closed for nearly five months due to heavy snowfall in the Zojilla Pass that connects the cold desert Ladakh region of the state with the rest of the country.

The highway was formally thrown open by joint Army,Police and civil administration.

More than 700 light-motor vehicles carrying Passengers, Students, and patience to the Ladakh and Kargil regions crossed the Zojilla Pass after the highway was reopened, said an official of the civil administration here.

The traffic of light motar vehicles was allowed to move from Drass to sonamarag from early morning to 1pm and from sonamarag to Drass in from 1 pm onwords.

The movement of heavy vehicles carrying essential supplies for Ladakh and Kargil regions from Sonamarag to Drass will be decided latter. Officials said

During the five to six winter months, when the highway remains snowbound, air traffic is the only link between the cold desert region of Ladakh and the rest of the country.
