Exchange of fire triggers protests in Kupwara village

Kupwara: Hundreds of people staged protests at Kantpora village in Kupwara district on Thursday evening shortly after an exchange of fire took place between government forces and militants.
The protesters shouted pro-freedom slogans as the forces tried to zero in on a structure where militants are suspected to be hiding.
Sources said that soldiers of 28 Rashtriya Rifles battalion of army and personnel of Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Special Operations Group cordoned off Kantpora village in Lolab area following information about the presence of militants in the village.
Locals said that a heavy exchange of fire continued till late in the evening but there was no report of casualty on either side.
While the exchange of fire was on, a group of villagers thronged streets shouting slogans against the government forces. The villagers also threw stones at the forces.
Sources said the forces fired in air and resorted to cane charging to disperse the protesters. The cordon of the village and intermittent firing continued till last reports poured in from the area.
No police official was available to brief about the ongoing encounter.
