SRINAGAR: Police arrested the Dukhtaran-e-Millat (DeM) chairperson, Syeda Aasiya Andrabi, and her secretary Sofi Fehmeeda, ahead of their visit to Handwara.
Condemning the police action, DeM general secretary, Nahida Nasreen, in a statement issued here, said Aasiya was scheduled to visit the bereaved families of Kupwara and Handwara whose kith and kin were killed by government forces recently.
“Our party members and activists had visited all the bereaved families. Now, Aasiya Sahiba was scheduled to visit there but the so-called administration arrested her along with Sofi Fehmeeda Sahiba during a night raid. This is worst kind of state terrorism and authorities are scared of a woman who had to just offer condolence,” she said, adding, the Dukhtaran-e-Millat workers and activists in Handwara still organised a programme there.
Criticising the state administration, Nahida said, “The perpetrators of the shameful acts like molestation of a girl were not even booked but those honourbale youth who protested against it were showered bullets. Even people are not allowed to mourn the loss of their martyred brethren; instead, the so-called administration suspended the employees who protested against the shameful act. Such example of brutality cannot be found in any part of the world.”
Nahida rejected the chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti’s claims that she visited the bereaved families. “The reality is that she (Mehbooba) didn’t muster courage to face the pro-freedom people there. She was scared and just talked to few people in Dak Bungalow. On the other hand, people of Handwara were keenly waiting for Aasiya Sahiba but given the situation, even to express condolence or solidarity has become a crime,” she said.
The DeM general secretary said that participation of thousands of people in the funerals of “mujahideen” in Lolab should be an eye-opener for New Delhi and local pro-India politicians. “These mujahideen were Pakistani and our heroes. India’s oppressive and suppressive policies won’t break our resolve and Insha Allah we will continue our struggle for freedom at any cost,” she said.
