Tangmarg residents demand demolition of school building unsafe since 2005

Baramulla: The residents of Mahiyan village at Tangmarg in this north Kashmir district demand demolition of a school building that, they say, was rendered unsafe by a quake way back in 2005.
As per the locals, the building of Government Middle School was declared unsafe by engineers and R&B department soon after the quake, but the authorities didn’t bother to repair or dismantle it.
“Our children are still made to study in this unsafe building, which can collapse anytime. If any untoward incident happens, the education department would be responsible for it,” Abdul Rehman, a local, said.
Interestingly, the school is situated on a bank of Ferozpora Nallah without any fence separating the stream and the school compound.
“We have approached the authorities several times in this regard, but to no avail. We are living under a constant fear,” another local, Ghulam Muhammad, said.
The school, constructed in 1980, even lacks a playground.
When contacted, the zonal education officer (ZEO) Tangmarg, Abdul Aziz Khan, said the school has an additional double-storey building.
Asked why the damaged building was still being used, he said, “I will look into the matter and talk to the headmaster about it.”
