Secretariat gherao by PHE daily wagers foiled

JAMMU: Police today foiled a protest demonstration of Public Health Engineering (PHE) daily wagers, who tried to gherao the civil secretariat over their long pending demand of regularization of jobs. Police had a tough time stopping the protesting workers from marching towards the Civil Secretariat.
A heavy contingent of police had been already deployed on various routes leading to civil secretariat Jammu.  Police chased the protesters from venue point and stopped them near BC Road. No protestors were to move forward.
“Many of us have been working as daily wage workers for past more than a decade, but despite assurances by successive state governments, no step has been taken to regularise our services,” said the protestors.
The protesters while addressing the media said the workers have been raising the demand for their regularisation for the past several months but the authorities did not pay heed forcing them to take to streets and gherao the civil secretariat. They further accused the BJP of not keeping their pre-poll promise to redress the grievances of the daily wage PHE workers.
The PHE workers have threatened to intensify their agitation if the government failed to regularise their services.
The PHE workers also projected their demands during one day convention held at Mandli in Billawar sub division of district Kathua today.
PHE workers from various PHE divisions and sub divisions including Basohli, Billawar, Bani, Hiranagar and Kathua participated in the protest rally and raised slogans against the PDP-BJP coalition government for not considering their demand of regularization. The protesters further projected the issues of the workers of the area and stressed upon the government to release pending wages of the workers and frame definite policy to regularise all the temporary and daily rated workers.
They further said that despite protests and strike of the workers, their issues remained unresolved and condemned the state government for ignoring the burning issues of the PHE employees and workers.
